Street photography can be defined as the genre that is not necessarily on the street but captures some drama from everyday life. This "special in mundane is a key aspect of street photography. There have been various masters of street photography who have invented and practiced their own techniques.
There is no set way of doing street photography. There are people who don't let their subjects know when they are being photographed and there are photographers who deliberately startle and surprise their subjects to get interesting expressions. One thing is sure, if you are a street photographer, be prepared for confrontations with people. Personally I feel the technique that works best for me is to be open about photographing people but not try ti make a direct eye contact. Thus you appear as a person taking photos for a project or assignment. People are usually ok about being photographed but when you ask them, they just say no as the the first response that comes to their mind.
I have been practicing street photography for 3 years now and have been chased away with sticks, brooms and gotten threats of being arrested. But if you try not to get nervous and talk reasonably people usually understand, If someone just doesn't, its best to ignore them.
